Scope of Work

The Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville North Carolina is a 6,000 seat multi-use facility that is heavily used and is the home to the professional minor league Fayetteville Marksmen hockey team.

The facility had an aging R-22 based refrigeration system. The owner of the facility, Cumberland County hired B32 Engineering Group, Inc. to evaluate options for replacing the existing ice system which included the refrigeration system, the ice rink floor and the dasher board system. Options for ammonia, CO2 and various synthetic refrigerants were presented to the County. The County selected ammonia refrigerant for its superior efficiency and sustainability, however, the refrigeration room was located in the center of the building on the second floor and shared space with most of the HVAC equipment for the facility. Due to code restrictions, the ammonia refrigeration room would have to be located elsewhere.

With B32s extensive experience in ice rink renovations they were able to present a solution that would place the ammonia refrigeration system in a new modular room outside the facility. The pipe routing between the new refrigeration room and the ice rink floor was the most challenging design element of this project. The project was a great success and will serve the facility well for the next 30 plus years.
